Season's First Goal Sparks Season's First Win

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Spencer Aeschliman's first career goal with less than seven minutes remaining before halftime gave Goshen College the lead and the defense made it stand up as the Maple Leafs defeated Siena Heights 1-0 in men's soccer action Tuesday night at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.

Coming off a short Chris Vendrely corner kick and a pass from Nate Nussbaum, Aeschliman's goal was one of 10 Goshen shots in the first half and one of 10 shots on goal for the game: the Maple Leafs led 10-2 in that category. It was also Goshen's first goal of the season after more than 128 minutes.

The hosts also took 11 of the game's 14 corner kicks (including eight of the first nine) and made only two of the 11 saves. Freshman Johan Escalante may not have received much statistical credit, but went the distance in his first career start in goal after coming on at the half in the season opener.

While Goshen was in front for nearly 52 minutes, like the right-side mirror on a car indicates, Siena Heights was always closer than the score appeared. The teams were level with eight shots apiece in the second half, including several Saint opportunities in the penalty area over the final quarter-hour. The visitors earned 15 free kicks from Goshen fouls, committing only eight themselves, and were eager enough to be ruled offside four times.

Goshen (1-1) returns to the pitch on Saturday evening for a match against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Robert Morris University. The 7 p.m. contest will form the second half of a doubleheader after the Maple Leaf women open their season against Cleary at 4:00.

More, including comments from Goshen head coach Arron Patrick, to come when available.
