Late First-Half Goals Sink Men In Classic Opener

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Wildcats of Baker University scored twice in an 11-minute span and the Maple Leafs of Goshen College never found the offense to respond Friday night as Baker won 2-1 in men's soccer action at the Goshen College Soccer complex.

After a Goshen foul in the 31st minute, Keaton Anchors flicked home a header off a free kick from Kyle Young, scoring with 13:56 left in the half. With 3:39 to play before the intermission, Austin Halsey scored the insurance goal after picking up a loose ball in the penalty area.

Baker (4-0) took a total of 22 shots in the contest, forcing five saves from Maple Leaf goalkeeper Dean Nafziger. The Maple Leafs (1-3) attempted only seven shots, and Wildcat netminder Patrick Rydberg did not make a save while extending his shutout streak to more than 381 minutes.

In a change of pace for Goshen, most of the shots came from upperclassmen for the first time this year. Senior Chris Vendrely led the team with three shots.

The game was the nightcap of day one at the Goshen College Classic as Holy Cross defeated no. 13 Georgia Gwinnett 1-0 in the opener. The classic continues Saturday night with Holy Cross facing Baker at 5 p.m., followed by Goshen against Georgia Gwinnett at 7.
