Men Drop Rivalry Game To Grace Despite Hot Start

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — After scoring 12 of the first 15 points, the Goshen College men's basketball team found the seas rougher in the final 36 minutes of an 88-69 loss at Grace College on Wednesday.

Trevor Commissaris and Christian Grider each scored four points in the opening spurt, with Goshen taking its largest lead of the game at the 16:01 mark of the first half. Following a 17-2 run by the host Lancers, the Maple Leafs trailed by six at the 9:43 mark and never led again.

Commissaris posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for Goshen (11-8, 3-4 Crossroads League). Dominique Bolden scored 20 points, a game high, while Devin Heath-Granger added 14 points coming off the bench for the first time this season.

Erik Bowen scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Lancers (15-4, 5-2 CL). No Grace player pulled down double-figure rebounds despite the team out-rebounding Goshen 36-28, due in large part to the 14 Lancers who saw at least 2:52 of playing time.

After making four of their first six shots, the Maple Leafs struggled from the floor for the rest of the half, entering the locker room down 36-22 after shooting 8-of-24 (33.3 percent). The Lancers, on the other hand, missed four of their first five attempts before going 14-for-20 (70 percent) in the next 16 minutes.

Both teams scored nearly at will in the second stanza: Grace scored 52 points to Goshen's 47 as the teams went 34-for-70 (48.6 percent) from the floor. Grace also sank 19 of 20 free-throw tries in the final 20 minutes.

The Maple Leafs finished with just nine assists on 26 makes, but held on to the ball well, forcing 10 turnovers while giving up only nine. Heath-Granger tied for a game high with three assists.

Goshen visits Marian University in Indianapolis on Saturday, with tip-off set for 3 p.m., before hosting Taylor next Tuesday to close out the first half of conference play.
