GOSHEN, Ind. — Freshman TJ White tallied two goals as the Goshen College men's soccer team's fourth overtime contest of the year ended 2-1 in the Maple Leafs' favor over Huntington University on Saturday night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
After a lightning delay earlier in the evening and overtime in the preceding women's game pushed kickoff back nearly 90 minutes to 8:29 p.m., both teams came out with high intensity on the wet and muddy field. In the 25th minute, a shot from sophomore Ethan Francois-Ravalier was tipped to the back side of the goal where White was positioned. Settling the ball back towards the middle of the field, White then slotted a shot under the keeper and into the far netting for the 1-0 lead, a score line that would hold until the half.
Each team registered six shots through the first 45 minutes, while Goshen had the corner kick edge 4-1.
The Maple Leafs (3-5-3, 1-2) seemed to have momentum and control for most of the contest, but a set piece in the 85th minute threatened to render that worthless. Following a free kick into the box, Luke Unger had his shot knocked down by Goshen goalkeeper Johan Escalante. The rebound, however, was another story, dropping into a crowd of Foresters where Travis Hurtis scored to make it 1-1 with 5:41 to play.
Huntington nearly pulled off an abrupt comeback on the ensuing kickoff, intercepting a Goshen pass and apparently scoring 14 seconds later, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The final five-plus minutes did not produce a legal goal, either, so the second Goshen home game of the night entered overtime. Huntington completed regulation with a 15-9 shot advantage while Goshen maintained the corner kick edge 10-5.
Six minutes and change into the first extra period, Goshen served a ball into the penalty area, which reversed course and headed toward the back side of the goal box. Settling it down was none other than White, who touched the ball from his left to right foot and around the goalkeeper before rocketing the game-winning goal into the roof of the net to complete his two-goal night and end the game with 3:32 on the clock.
The Maple Leafs finished with 11 shots and 10 corner kicks, while Huntington ended up with 15 shots and five corner kicks. Escalante made six saves in goal in the win. His opposite number, Brad Buzzard, made two saves. Isaac Wust and Miguel de Souza of Huntington led all players with three shots each.
Goshen returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Marian University in the final home game before a two-game road trip. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. with radio coverage beginning at 5:40 p.m. on Goshen College's radio station, 91.1 The Globe.
