HUNTINGTON, Ind. — A late-game corner kick proved too much for Goshen to handle in the Crossroads League men's soccer tournament quarterfinals as the Huntington University Foresters downed the Maple Leafs 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon at King Stadium.
Playing at one of the two Crossroads League soccer stadiums without artificial illumination, the Maple Leafs participated in an afternoon match for the first time since the weekend after Labor Day, leading to unseasonably warm 68-degree weather at kickoff. A diagonal wind nearing 20 miles per hour persisted for the entire match, creating passes that were too long in one direction and short and wobbly in the other.
With the wind at their back for the first 45 minutes, the Foresters (8-9-1) used it to their advantage, earning all five corner kicks of the first half and taking five shots. But none of the shots were on target and Goshen's two shots on goal were easily saved, so the game entered halftime scoreless.
Goshen's best chance of the first stanza came 20 minutes in, when a ball served into the box was headed on frame by Calvin Mangunda. Unfortunately for the Maple Leaf senior, the ball went right into the waiting hands of Forester goalkeeper Brad Buzzard. The Maple Leafs (6-7-5) registered four shots through the first 45 minutes.
With the wind at its back in the second half, Goshen looked to push numbers forward and succeeded in firing six shots. However, a grove of Forester defenders held strong through the full 90 minutes of regulation, with Buzzard making only a single save, and for the seventh time this season, the Maple Leafs headed to overtime.
Huntington completed regulation with a 11-10 shot advantage while Goshen took the second stanza's only corner kick.
The coin toss at the beginning of overtime determined that the first overtime period would be played with the teams defending the same goals as the second half, and the 10-minute stanza yielded just one shot for each team.
The Foresters scored with 3:18 left in double overtime, when a corner kick was played towards the penalty spot and then shot to the right post. A goal-line save from sophomore Ethan Francois-Ravalier kept the game alive, but only for a few more seconds before Bradey Gerke drove the rebound home for the golden goal victory.
The concession was Goshen's first since October 12, snapping a shutout streak of 405 minutes and three seconds, the seventh-longest in school history and longest since 1981.
The Maple Leafs finished with 11 shots and one corner kick, while Huntington ended up with 17 shots and six kicks from the corner flag. Goshen sophomore keeper Johan Escalante made three saves in goal in the loss; Buzzard took the win with three saves. The Foresters committed 10 fouls to GC's five.
Goshen wraps up the 2016 campaign with a 6-7-5 record, including a 4-3-2 mark in conference play, with all-conference teams set to be announced next week. For more on each of Goshen's 13 athletic teams throughout the offseason, visit GoLeafs.net or follow the Maple Leafs on Twitter at @GC_MSoccer.
