Goshen Hoops Resumes Winning Ways With Victory Over Roosevelt

GOSHEN, Ind. — Behind 16 first-half points from Conner Funkhouser and an 11-0 run spanning the halftime break, the Goshen College men's basketball team raised its record to 7-4 with a 78-71 victory over Roosevelt University on Tuesday night at Gunden Gymnasium.

Funkhouser went 5-for-6 from the floor including a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance, including a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc, in the opening 20 minutes as Goshen led 39-38 at halftime. Roosevelt (4-8) took its largest lead of the game at 38-32 with 100 seconds left before giving up the final seven points of the first half and the first four points of the second half.

The Lakers tied the game three times in the second stanza, even taking the lead for 38 seconds, and never fell more than seven points off the pace, but over the final eight minutes GC always led by at least two.

With Goshen up 70-63 at the 3:00 mark, the Maple Leafs bled 24 or more seconds off the clock on four straight possessions, getting 1.25 points per possession out of the ordeal. Roosevelt was a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line in the second half and 12-for-12 for the game, but the hosts outshot their guests 44 percent to 31 percent after halftime.

Funkhouser finished with 23 points, Xavier Newson 17 and Kevin Phillips 16 for Goshen: Roosevelt's Jake Ludwig scored a game-high 24. Ludwig and Phillips each paced their team with eight rebounds. For Goshen, Devin Heath-Granger was a fourth player in double figures with 13 points, a game-high six assists and a game-high five steals.

Funkhouser and Ludwig each sank four of their team's seven 3-pointers: the sides nearly came out level on the glass as well, with Roosevelt getting 37 rebounds to Goshen's 36.

The Maple Leafs tip off a stretch of three games in three days on Saturday when they visit Lincoln Christian University in Illinois at 4 p.m. EST.
