ADRIAN, Mich. — The Goshen College men's soccer team conceded a goal midway through the second half, but an equalizer from senior Jadon Chupp minutes later and a go-ahead goal from junior Ari Benjamin in the 83rd minute gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 victory over Siena Heights Tuesday evening at O'Loughlin Stadium.

The first half saw plenty of possession for Goshen, as control in the middle of the field led to plenty of space for the outside defenders to get up into the action. GC took six shots in the opening 12 minutes, but neither team could muster a goal and entered halftime tied 0-0.

Both coaches must have said something right during the break, as both teams came out with a hunger for goals. Siena Heights struck first in the 67th minute: a shot from Elmedin Celovic bounced off of a Goshen defender and onto the foot of Alessandro De Santis, who slotted the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Goshen knew it needed a response, and just under five minutes later they got one, as freshman Daniel Rosales played a corner kick to the edge of the six-yard box, where senior Jadon Chupp flicked the ball up over everyone and into the far-side netting to level the game at 1-1.

The Maple Leafs weren't done, either. With 7:11 to play, freshman Darius Rawlins found himself in the box and put a shot on goal, which was saved. But the rebound deflected right to the foot of junior Ari Benjamin. Seeing the keeper on the ground from the save, Benjamin rocketed a shot into the roof of the goal to seal the comeback for Goshen.

Sophomore goalkeeper Johan Escalante made a career-high nine saves in the victory. Goshen took 18 shots to Siena Heights' 15 and each team had four corner kicks. GC's Jesus Dominguez Olvera led the Maple Leafs with four shots: he, Benjamin and fullback Ethan Francois-Ravalier each put two attempts on frame.

The win is the third in as many years against Siena Heights for head coach Arron Patrick, and mimicked the scoreline of his first career win two years ago on the same field. It marks the second time in Patrick's career that his team has given up the first goal and come back to win.

Goshen (1-0-1) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Madonna University, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. and radio coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m. on 91.1 The Globe.
