Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Spencer Aeschliman's right-footed finish sent Goshen College into halftime with the lead, but the final result was decidedly more neutral in a 1-1 Crossroads League men's soccer draw Saturday night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Aeschliman extended his career high with his third goal of the season, which came 1:44 before halftime on a pass from Lucas Bontreger after Nate Nussbaum won the ball on the front edge of the attacking third. Huntington pulled level 14:52 after halftime on a Jake Erlandson goal that followed a defensive lapse in the same penalty area.
Huntington (8-4-3, 3-1-2) had the bulk of the possession in the first dozen minutes with Erlandson taking the match's first shot. GC goalkeeper Tomas Fonseca was called upon for the opening save in the 14th minute, but the Maple Leafs (6-7-2, 1-3-2) had the first dangerous opportunity when Matt Granitz hit the crossbar less than 90 seconds later.
The Foresters had a handful of chances through the middle of the first half before the momentum swung back toward the Maple Leafs, who held the home-field advantage despite the match falling on the opening weekend of fall break. GC's goal was the end product of four Maple Leaf shots in a seven-minute span.
Three Huntington corner kicks in the first dozen minutes of the second half yielded a total of one shot, and neither team would put an attempt on target after the equalizer until the 75th minute when Goshen's Nate Nussbaum missed wide.
The hosts had another opportunity with nine minutes remaining, only for Huntington goalkeeper Gabe Greenfield to reach the ball at the same time as the GC offense, and each team had an attempt saved in the final five minutes of regulation.
Goshen had both corner-kick chances in the first half of overtime, although the team's lone shot on goal was a 60-yard try from Granitz in the final seconds, and forced Greenfield into five saves over the final 10 minutes. The Maple Leafs finished with 20 shots and 11 attempts on target, outdoing Huntington by two in each category.
Bontreger and Stuart Aeschliman led Goshen with four shots each; both players joined Ethan Francois-Ravalier with two shots on target for a team high. Erlandson took nine shots and Matheus Louzada five for Huntington; Greenfield made 10 saves.
Notable Numbers:
2: Spencer Aeschliman's goal gives him more scores this season than his previous three campaigns combined; he scored once as a freshman in 2015 and once as a junior last fall. The senior was a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017 and has made 61 career starts.
39: The teams combined for a season-high 39 fouls; Goshen's previous high-water mark this season had been 37 whistles against Madonna in the season opener.
7: With two-thirds of the conference schedule complete, Goshen is one of seven schools separated by two points in the Crossroads League standings. The Maple Leafs, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Saint Francis all have five points (1-3-2) while Bethel and Marian each have six (2-4) and Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor have seven (2-3-1). Winning the match rather than drawing it would have sent GC into a tie for fourth.
