Four players hit double figures as Leafs 'steal' win at Aquinas

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Sydney Stein and Graysen Cockerham each scored a team-high 14 points and Taniece Chapman added a double-double as the Goshen College women's basketball team topped Aquinas 76-72 Tuesday night at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.

The Maple Leafs (1-1) used a 26-point second-quarter outburst to seize control of the proceedings, leading for the final 25 minutes of the non-conference affair.

Aquinas (1-1) opened the scoring 30 seconds after tip-off on a 3-pointer by Bri Spica, but Goshen's defense held the Saints off the scoreboard for the next 3 1/2 minutes as Goshen opened a 7-3 lead. The hosts took a 21-15 lead into the quarter after two more Spica triples.

Alyson Prigge paced the Maple Leafs with eight points in the second quarter, a 10-minute span that saw GC connect on 6 straight field goals at one point while limiting Aquinas to two buckets.

Goshen took the lead at 24-23 on a Stein 3-pointer 6:06 before halftime; Aquinas scored for a 25-24 edge on the following possession, but Taylor Roasa's basket at the 4:59 mark gave the Leafs a lead they would never surrender. Thirty seconds later, Prigge sank the first of her two 3s in the quarter, and a Kiarah Copeland trey with 2:37 left pushed the lead into double figures.

The Maple Leafs led 41-30 at halftime after shooting 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the floor and 50 percent (7-of-14) from 3-point range. GC sank 11 of its 12 foul shots as well.

Both teams traded baskets on their first three possessions after halftime; Aquinas went cold after that, going without a score until after the four-minute mark, and Goshen extended its lead to a game-high 15 points at 53-38. Chapman and Cockerham combined for the last seven Maple Leaf points of the quarter as the Maple Leafs led 58-47 through three periods.

The Saints would muster a fourth-quarter comeback, scoring the first 5 points of the period and getting a Spica layup with 5:46 left to cut the GC lead to 3, but never broke through to tie the score. Copeland and Chapman each scored in the last two minutes, with a pair of Cockerham free throws at 0:04 setting the final score.

Chapman finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds; Copeland added 10 points to put four Maple Leafs in double figures. Carley Andrews led Aquinas with 18 points
