Aeschliman strikes twice as men topple Holy Cross 3-2

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Stuart Aeschliman bookended the halftime intermission with a pair of goals Friday evening as the Goshen College men's soccer team topped Holy Cross 3-2 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Axel Valenzuela added a pair of scores for Holy Cross and Jimmelle Ramkissoon chipped in an insurance goal for the Maple Leafs, who also got three saves from Tomas Fonseca.

The Saints (0-2) took three of the game's first four shots, although Goshen (1-1) came back to level that category before either team scored. Holy Cross got on the board first with 6:28 left in the first half when Luis Correa-Cabral played Valenzuela forward into the left side of the goal area.

That lead lasted barely six minutes, however, as Goshen would level the score 26 seconds before halftime. The Maple Leafs cleared a Holy Cross free kick out of the defensive third and countered up the left sideline before sending a cross into the penalty area. The Saints got the first touch, but the ball squirted free to Aeschliman for a 15-yard finish to the far post.

GC's defense held the Saints without a shot for the first half-hour after the break, but the Maple Leafs were unable to tickle the onion sack for a goal of their own on the first six tries.

Somewhat unusually, the hosts' breakthrough came as a result of their own foul. Holy Cross' Bruno Souza missed a free kick wide to the right, setting up a Fonseca goal kick that shifted the field position back into Goshen's attacking third. After a throw-in, Spencer Aeschliman left the ball to Ollie Smith at the top of the penalty arc and Smith led Stuart Aeschliman past the final defender for another far-post putaway.

Aeschliman's second goal of the season and 14th of his career was also his fifth against Holy Cross after racking up a hat trick in a 4-3 loss last season. In 134 career minutes against the Saints, he has eight shots, of which six have hit the target and five have gone in.

Ramkissoon added his first collegiate goal with 7:43 remaining before Valenzuela got one back out of a mass of humanity at the 4:21 mark. The Saints missed wide on their only chance to tie the score, which came in the 89th minute.

Goshen posted a 17-10 edge in shots despite Holy Cross taking 19 free kicks to GC's 8. Aeschliman's four attempts led all players while Souza and Ramkissoon added three each. Goshen also had five of the match's six corner kicks.

The Maple Leafs used a season-high 12 substitutes in the first of two games this weekend: Fonseca and center back Tevin Gilkes were the only players to go the full 90 minutes.

The Maple Leafs return to action Saturday night when they host Central Methodist University, the 18th-ranked team in the NAIA coaches poll, at 7 p.m.
