Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College outshot the 18th-ranked men's soccer team in the NAIA by almost a 2-to-1 margin in the second half Saturday night, but Central Methodist University's three first-half goals proved too much to overcome in a 3-1 win at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The Eagles (2-0-1) got on the board as a result of a free kick from near midfield in the 16th minute. Pery Guzman lobbed a service into the penalty area, where it fell to the head of Santiago Sierra for a 1-0 lead. The advantage doubled when Colin Horn finished a cross from the left side with 20:44 left and Adrian Gutierrez slotted home a half-volley for a 3-0 lead with 10:23 remaining.
CMU got off the first two shots of the second half, but once Maple Leaf winger Ollie Smith hit the target for a save in the 52nd minute, the tides began to turn. From that point forward, Goshen had nine shots to their guests' three. Lucas Vilela missed high on a rebounded shot attempt some 75 seconds later.
Stuart Aeschliman added his third goal in two nights for the Maple Leafs (1-2), who played their third match in five days. The sophomore tallied with 18 seconds left in regulation from a shallow angle on the left side of the north goal.
With each team playing its second game in as many days (CMU and Bethel played to a 0-0 draw in Mishawaka on Friday), the teams combined for 11 first-half substitutions and 14 second-half changes. Among Maple Leaf reserves, Smith and Lucas Bontreger both put shots on target: Aeschliman and Vilela both started and led the team with three attempts each.
Tomas Fonseca made six saves in the GC net while Vince Gelei stopped four shots for CMU, which had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Goshen took 14 of the 25 free kicks.
