GOSHEN, Ind. — Luke Rush won a pair of matches, including his first singles action of the season, and the Goshen College men's tennis team won its Crossroads League quarterfinal for the third straight season when it topped Huntington 5-2 Tuesday at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.
The fourth-seeded Maple Leafs swept the doubles action and won the first four singles matches off the court to improve to 9-5 on the season and 7-3 against Crossroads League opposition. All four higher seeds won Tuesday in the opening round of postseason play.
After using an 11th-game break to salt away the third and final doubles match, GC raced to an early lead in singles. The Maple Leafs led by quick 4-1 margins at both no. 2 and no. 6 before winning first sets at every odd-numbered position by either 7-5 or 7-6 margins.
Rush gave Goshen its first singles point in a 6-1, 6-1 victory at no. 6 singles, followed by his doubles partner Danny Boussom, who posted a 6-2, 7-5 win at no. 2. On the side of the court that hosted odd-numbered matches, Filippo Bigardi and Juan Miguel Ciudad finished off wins within moments of one another to send the team lead to an insurmountable 5-0. Boussom, Bigardi and Ciudad all joined Rush as double winners.
The Foresters (5-7) got on the scoreboard with a 7-5, 6-3 win at no. 4 singles, leaving only the no. 5 match on the courts. Huntington would prevail there as well, winning a 15-13 tiebreak in lieu of a third set, but the team match had already been decided.
Goshen travels to top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday in the semifinal round of the tournament. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at the Sutter Tennis Center in Marion. The winner of that match will advance to the tournament championship match on Saturday against either Marian or Grace.
