Early equalizer proves insufficient in Senior Night defeat

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Lucas Bontreger and Stuart Aeschliman hooked up to respond to an early goal in the first half, but Mount Vernon Nazarene University found a go-ahead goal in the second half to top the Goshen College men's soccer team 2-1 Saturday night on Senior Night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Nigell de Matas and Ben Fuller scored for the Cougars (10-4-3, 5-1-2), who broke the ice 85 seconds after the opening kickoff and pulled ahead less than 12 minutes into the second half.

Joshua Dunn made 5 saves in the Mount Vernon Nazarene net and Tomas Fonseca recorded 9 for Goshen (6-10, 2-6).

Mount Vernon Nazarene opened the scoring from 25 yards out on a shot over the Maple Leaf defense, but less than two minutes later, Goshen hit the target with a pair of shots and put the biscuit in the basket. In the fourth minute, Aeschliman's header was saved by Dunn, but the rebound fell to Bontreger and the sophomore did not miss from 15 yards for his 11th goal of the season.

The Cougars took the next three shots before Aeschliman had another try saved in the 24th minute, but neither team broke through again in the first half and the teams went into halftime in a 1-all deadlock. Goshen took 6 of the 10 shots, but the Cougars had all four corner kicks.

The Maple Leafs got their first corner kick of the night less than a minute into the second half and Aeschliman's fourth shot of the night was sent out for a corner in the 54th minute, but Goshen was called offside on the ensuing possession.

Mount Vernon Nazarene's final goal came not off a corner kick, but a free kick in the corner with 33:09 remaining. Ben Fuller got a head on the cross and sent it past Fonseca into the right side of the net for a 2-1 lead.

The teams combined for a lot of action without a lot of shots over the next 20 minutes, racking up 22 fouls and 6 yellow cards over the course of the night. Fonseca registered four saves in the final 10 minutes while Bontreger, Kristian Gecaj and Sven Badstieber all missed tying attempts down the stretch.

The Cougars finished with a 12-10 edge in shots and a 7-5 margin in corner kicks.

The Maple Leafs wrap up the regular season Wednesday at Indiana Wesleyan, needing a win and some help to make it into next month's Crossroads League tournament. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. EDT, a recent change from the original 7 p.m. start time.
