Goshen drops 2-0 decision on road at Taylor

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Two Taylor University goals in a four-minute span proved too much for the Goshen College men's soccer team to overcome Wednesday night in a 2-0 Crossroads League defeat at Turner Stadium.

Tomas Fonseca made 4 saves for the Maple Leafs (4-7, 0-3), but Adam Siegelin broke open a scoreless tie when he scored with 21:50 left in the second half and Jhon Alzate doubled the lead with 18:10 remaining. Quinn Partain and Joaquin Hansen were credited with the assists.

The Trojans (5-5-2, 1-2) finished with a 12-10 edge in total shots and a 7-4 margin in shots on goal. Taylor took 4 corner kicks to Goshen's 3 and got 4 saves of their own from Luke Williams.

Ollie Smith paced Goshen by putting both of his shot attempts on goal: Kristian Gecaj and Stuart Aeschliman also had 2 shots apiece and Lucas Bontreger had the other shot on target. No Taylor player had more than 2 shots, either, with Hansen and Josiah Wieland putting both of theirs on goal.

Three of Fonseca's saves came in the first 20 minutes, when Wieland tested him twice and Owen Hardy got off a shot as well. The halftime scoreboard gave Taylor a 6-4 shot advantage but produced no actual scoring. Three of Goshen's four shots came in the opening quarter-hour as well.

Gecaj and Smith both had tries at goal in the opening minutes of the second half, and the Maple Leafs led 3-1 on the shot counter before the buildup that led to Taylor's first goal. The next shot produced TU's second tally.

Goshen would have three chances to equalize: Aeschliman missed wide in the 73rd minute while Bontreger's attempt required a save in the 85th. Matt Granitz put a shot over the crossbar with the team's final chance of the match.

Goshen is back in action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the team hosts Marian University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The game is part of the college's Homecoming Weekend.
