MARION, Ind. — The Goshen College men's tennis team was eliminated from the Crossroads League tournament Thursday in a 4-0 decision by Indiana Wesleyan University.
Isaac Steiner and Grant Esposito each won twice for the top-seeded Wildcats, who improved to 17-0 on the season.
Under the Crossroads League tournament's policy, doubles play was abandoned once one team won two matches and singles play was stopped once the team match was determined. The former part of the rule meant that Goshen's Filippo Bigardi and Juan Miguel Ciudad did not get a chance to finish off their 5-4 lead at no. 2 doubles, while two of the three unfinished singles matches were headed for split sets.
The Maple Leafs (9-6) got a 6-0 set win from Bigardi at the no. 1 position, while Ciudad was leading his second set 5-0 when time was called.
Indiana Wesleyan took the doubles point with a 6-1 win at no. 1 doubles and a 6-3 win at no. 3, then wrapped up the singles portion of the match by taking each of the lower three positions. Alex Serwatka was the other Wildcat to finish his match.
With the victory, Indiana Wesleyan advanced to face Marian on Saturday in the tournament championship, where the winner gets an automatic bid to the NAIA national championship in May. This is the fourth straight year that Marian and IWU have met in the conference title tilt: Goshen remains the last team to crash their party after a runner-up finish in 2015.
Due to a postponement late in the regular season, Goshen will return to the court once more this fall as the Maple Leafs host Roosevelt University on Wednesday at the GC Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 5 p.m. EDT.
