Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Henrique Eichenberger's first-half free kick sent the first match of the 2019 Goshen College men's soccer season into overtime, but the Maple Leafs came up empty as Cleary University won 2-1 in sudden death Wednesday night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Benjamin Delage struck a free kick into the north goal with 2:48 remaining in the first extra session to give the Cougars (1-0) the victory.
Cleary opened the scoring through Danilo Milicic less than three minutes after the opening kickoff, which was delayed by more than half an hour due to a lightning delay in the preceding women's game. The visitors led through most of a chippy first half – one with twice as many fouls as shots – until Eichenberger leveled the score in the 36th minute of his first match in Maple Leaf purple and white.
Goshen (0-1) took 7 of the 11 shots in the second half, putting three of them on target. Uriel Macias and Felipe Gallo each prompted saves from Cleary netminder Ruggeri Verzillo in the first quarter-hour and Macias tested him again after checking back into the game in the final 10 minutes.
The Maple Leaf defense kept the Cougars without a shot on goal for more than 40 minutes before the game-winner. Tomas Fonseca made his lone save of the night in the 53rd minute.
The two teams combined for 21 fouls and each had a player booked. Goshen took four of the match's six corner kicks and posted an 11-7 edge in total shots.
The Maple Leafs make their longest road trip of the season on Saturday, a six-hour drive one way to play the University of Rio Grande in southeastern Ohio. Kickoff between the Maple Leafs and Red Storm, the fifth-ranked team in the NAIA, is set for 7 p.m.
