Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. — Matt Granitz and Lucas Bontreger scored just more than 2 minutes apart to pull the Goshen College men's soccer team level with Siena Heights University, but the Saints broke through in overtime to send the Maple Leafs home on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision Tuesday night at O'Loughlin Stadium.
Chris Ornelas scored twice for Siena Heights (1-1), whose three goals were all of the unassisted variety. The Saints outshot Goshen 26-12 and took six of the match's eight corner kicks.
The opening goal came just after the midpoint of the first half, when Alexander Mittag put Siena Heights up 1-0 with 22:02 on the clock. The Saints took 12 shots to Goshen's 6 in the opening 45 minutes, but Tomas Fonseca made 5 saves to keep the margin at one goal entering halftime.
Ornelas, who took a game-high 8 shots and 5 shots on goal, doubled the lead with a strike 10:27 into the second half before Granitz reduced the arrears on a Bontreger assist with 27:36 to play. Two minutes and a second later, Bontreger finished off a pass from Felipe Gallo to square the score at 2-all.
The Maple Leafs (0-3) were outshot 8-1 over the final 25 minutes, but made it to overtime behind eight Fonseca saves and an 86th-minute try that hit the crossbar. Goshen went up a man when the Saints had a defender sent off 67 seconds into the sudden-victory period, but Ornelas scored just before the five-minute mark to cap his team's first win.
Granitz and Bontreger posted matching lines of 4 shots, 2 shots on goal and 1 goal apiece, leading Goshen in all three categories. Gustavo Barros took 6 shots and Andrew Kozan made 3 saves for the Saints.
The Maple Leafs return home to the John Ingold Athletic Complex on Saturday to close out the month with a visit from Robert Morris University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
