Maple Leaf netmen split Saturday in Summit City

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Martim Cafe and Josh Friesen each won three individual matches Saturday, pairing with one another in a pair of doubles wins and adding singles victories in a sweep, as the Goshen College men's tennis team split two matches, knocking off the University of Saint Francis 7-0 and losing to Indiana Tech 5-2 at Swinney Park.

The Maple Leafs (5-5, 3-3 Crossroads League) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets against USF (1-8, 1-6). Cafe and Friesen blanked their foes at no. 1 doubles while Danny Boussom and Luke Rush allowed 1 game in a victory at no. 3.

In singles action, Bigardi led Goshen off the court with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at no. 1 singles. Cafe followed him with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the no. 3 spot with Juan Miguel Ciudad sealing the victory behind a second-set 6-1 win at no. 2.

Hermes Flores pulled out a three-set super-tiebreak win at no. 5 with Friesen and Evan Beck also winning to finish the team shutout.

In the nightcap, Goshen took the doubles point by a 2-1 margin with Cafe and Friesen winning a rubber match 6-4 at the pole position. Boussom and Rush added a 6-3 win at no. 3 to start the comeback after Indiana Tech (4-0) won the first doubles match off the court.

Singles play would prove a different animal, though, with the Warriors (4-0) reeling off five of the six matches to come back and prevail. Bigardi used a 7-5, 6-1 win at no. 1 to earn the Maple Leafs their only singles point of the afternoon while Friesen required a third set super-tiebreak at no. 5.

Goshen returns to conference play Tuesday, hosting Huntington University at the GC tennis complex. The two schools are currently part of a four-way tie for fourth in the conference standings, each needing a win or a loss by Saint Francis or Bethel to clinch a conference tournament berth. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
