Boussom wins twice as singles powers Goshen to victory

GOSHEN, Ind. — A Taylor University comeback earned the Trojans the doubles point, but the Goshen College men's tennis team locked up home-court advantage in the Crossroads League tournament with a 4-3 win Tuesday at the GC Tennis Complex.

While the team score was close, most of the individual matches were decided in straight sets: none of the Maple Leafs' singles wins involved dropping more than six games.

Danny Boussom was a double winner for Goshen (7-5, 5-3), pairing with Luke Rush to win a doubles match 6-2 at the no. 3 spot and posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Salvador LoCascio at no. 4 singles.

The Trojans (7-4, 4-4) took each of the remaining doubles matches for a 1-0 lead before the Maple Leafs pulled back ahead with the first three singles matches off the court. Boussom, Filippo Bigardi and Josh Friesen all won, as did Hermes Flores to seal the team match at no. 6, making it 4-2 overall.

The last match on the court was no. 2 singles, pitting Taylor's Chase Bremner against Goshen's Juan Miguel Ciudad. Because the team match had not been decided when they split the first two sets, the two athletes played out the full third set, with the freshman prevailing 7-5.

Christen Jacquottet, who won at no. 1 doubles and no. 3 singles, was the Trojans' only two-time winner.

The victory moved Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson to 3-1 all-time against his alma mater and locked the Maple Leafs into the fourth seed in the Crossroads League men's tennis tournament next week. For the fourth time in six years, GC will host a first-round match in the tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The Maple Leafs close out their conference season Thursday against Spring Arbor University. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at the Jones Tennis Center.
