Second-half salvo ends with Goshen on short end in league opener

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Uriel Macias and Stuart Aeschliman each scored Wednesday night, but Bethel University came out on top of the Goshen College men's soccer team by a 3-2 margin Wednesday night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex in each team's Crossroads League opener.

Four of the game's five goals came in an eight-minute flurry in the second half: Isaac Nunez scored twice and Lehy Felix once for the Pilots (4-4-1, 1-0), while Macias got in on the fun for Goshen in the 63rd minute before Aeschliman scored with 38 seconds remaining.

Goshen (4-5, 0-1) finished with 15 shots to Bethel's 9 and a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Each team took 5 corner kicks and received 3 yellow cards.

A cagey defensive struggle in the early going resulted in neither team taking a shot until the 24th minute, and it would be more than half an hour before Ollie Smith's attempt forced the first save by a goalkeeper. At the intermission, the shot total and corner count each favored Bethel 4-3, but the game remained scoreless.

Each team got a shot on target in the first 90 seconds after play resumed, with Nunez breaking the ice in the 60th minute before doubling the lead 94 seconds later. Macias got a goal back after just more than a minute for Goshen: all told, it was three goals in a span of two minutes and 43 seconds.

The Pilots regained their two-goal lead on a Felix strike 10 seconds before the midpoint of the half. Goshen would test goalkeeper Finn Popescu three times over the next 20 minutes, but he responded by making three of his 8 saves.

Goshen won two corners and a free kick in the final four minutes, eventually putting a bulge in the onion bag when the free kick fell to Aeschliman in the right side of the penalty area in the 90th minute.

Goshen had a pair of attempts to tie the score in the final half-minute: Lucas Bontreger had his attempt saved before Sven Badstieber missed wide left at the final horn.

Tomas Fonseca finished with 3 saves for GC.

Goshen hits the road for four of its next five games, beginning Saturday with a visit to Grace College in Winona Lake. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
