SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — The Goshen College men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win against Spring Arbor University on the road Thursday night while the Maple Leaf women dropped a 7-0 match in each team's Crossroads League finale.
Josh Friesen and Danny Boussom each won twice for the Goshen men (8-5, 6-3), who wrapped up the doubles point in a tiebreak win at no. 3 and proceeded to take five of the six singles matches in straight sets to procure the victory.
The Maple Leaf women (1-13, 0-9) got a doubles victory from Hannah McCoy and Victoria Oakes, who topped Morgan Summons and Kenzie Weener by a 6-4 margin. Unfortunately for the guests, Spring Arbor (4-6, 3-6) had already won the other two doubles matches and carried the lead into singles play.
In the singles segment, Anna Osborne took her first set to a tiebreak the no. 4 position and McCoy stayed level at no. 3 until a late service break gave the Cougars the win.
GC's men prevailed at each of the top five positions; the only victor for Spring Arbor (4-6, 3-6) was Drew Hall at no. 6 singles.
Boussom paced the GC men, dropping four games in his victory at no. 3; Hermes Flores and Josh Friesen conceded five and six games, respectively.
Goshen was slated to close out the regular season on Friday with a non-conference match against Roosevelt University, but the match was postponed Thursday evening due to the forecast for inclement weather. A new date for that match was not immediately available.
Instead, the Maple Leaf men will proceed to the Crossroads League tournament, where GC earned the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Huntington on Tuesday. A time will be announced for that match when it is determined.
