First-half lapse sinks Leafs at Grace

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Goshen College men's soccer team posted an 18-11 edge in shots and took six of the match's seven corner kicks but couldn't crack the scoresheet in a 2-0 Crossroads League loss to Grace College on Saturday night at First Source Bank Field.

The Lancers scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half to continue their unbeaten start to the Crossroads League season, getting goals from Marcelo Talamas with 15:53 and 12:59 remaining in the period.

Goshen (4-6, 0-2) had 11 shots, 6 corner kicks and 10 free kicks in the second half, but was unable to convert by putting the ball in the back of the net.

The Maple Leafs got 5 shots from Sven Badstieber and 4 each from Ollie Smith and Lucas Bontreger. Each of the latter two players registered a team-high 3 shots on target and Tomas Fonseca made 5 saves,

Talamas led Grace (7-1-2, 1-0-1) with 5 shots, all on frame. Gonzalo Salo made 7 saves to preserve the shutout.

Goshen took the first five shots of the game and had tested Salo three times before the Lancers broke through to score their two goals. Neither team got off a shot in the balance of the first half, which left the score 2-0 at the intermission despite Goshen having a 7-5 edge in the shot column.

Badstieber had three chances off corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the second half as the visitors took five of the first seven shots, but he missed wide twice and high once.

The last quarter-hour brought a flurry of Maple Leaf activity in the form of six more shots, two of which were saved by Salo. Ollie Smith had perhaps the best chance in the 87th minute, hitting the crossbar on a counterattack.

The Maple Leafs continue their road trip on Wednesday with a visit to Taylor University in Upland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
