GOSHEN, Ind. — Evan Beck won his match in straight sets at no. 6 singles Wednesday, but the Goshen College men's and women's tennis teams each suffered setbacks at the hands of the University of Northwestern Ohio at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.
The Racers men, ranked 17th in the NAIA, topped the Maple Leafs 5-2, while the UNOH women backed up their status as vote recipients with a 7-0 win.
Beck took the final seven games off Alfredo Barcelo in a 6-4, 6-0 victory, posting his second win in as many days and finishing the final match off the courts. Filippo Bigardi added the other win for the Maple Leafs (3-2), pulling out his third set by a 6-2 margin at the no. 1 singles spot.
Josh Friesen came within two points of adding a third Maple Leaf victory, pushing his third-set super tiebreak past its scheduled 10-point length before falling 13-11 at no. 5 singles. The set was shortened to the tiebreaker because UNOH (2-2) had won the first three singles matches off the court and clinched the team match.
Elsie Koop Liechty and Sarah Hinshaw each pushed their Racer foes to 6-3 third sets as Northwestern Ohio claimed its first win of the season in the women's match. Koop Liechty won seven games on the evening, teaming with Kyra Krall at no. 3 doubles before playing the last women's match to finish at no. 6 singles.
The Maple Leafs (0-5) rested Hannah McCoy in singles and Ashley Arroyo in doubles in their second match out of four in a 78-hour span from Wednesday to Friday.
Goshen hosts a de-facto triangular match on Saturday, squaring off with Indiana Wesleyan at 9 a.m. in a Crossroads League tilt before taking on Aquinas in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. The Wildcats and Saints meet in a neutral-site contest at 1 p.m.
