Leafs top Aquinas, lose to IWU to split tri-match

GOSHEN, Ind. — Josh Friesen won a pair of matches Saturday as the Goshen College men's tennis team went to Splitsville, dropping a 7-0 decision to Indiana Wesleyan University in Crossroads League action before bouncing back to take a 6-1 win over Aquinas College at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

Filippo Bigardi, Martim Cafe and Luke Rush each added victories for the Maple Leafs (4-3, 2-2), all of which came in the second of the day's two matches. Aquinas (0-2) dealt Goshen an early 2-0 lead by defaulting the lowest two singles spots, while a victory by Friesen and Rush at no. 2 doubles gave Goshen the doubles point and a 3-0 margin.

Nicholas Klak won twice for the Saints, taking a win over Juan Miguel Ciudad by retirement at no. 2 singles and pairing with Joel Hancox to win 6-3 at the top doubles position.

Friesen dropped a single game in his no. 4 singles win and Cafe was only one game behind in his win at no. 3.

In the lid-lifter of the day's schedule, Indiana Wesleyan (6-0, 4-0) took all nine matches in straight sets to maintain its joint possession of first place in the league. The Wildcats swept doubles play when the match began and quickly finished off wins at the first, second and fifth singles courts to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

Cafe and Friesen put up the most resistance of any GC players, each coming within a single break of a tiebreaker in their first sets. Cafe dropped a 7-5, 6-3 score at no. 3 while Friesen's match finished 6-4, 6-2.

Goshen is off for two days before welcoming Marian University to the court in a rematch of last season's Crossroads League tournament semifinal. First serve is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday.
