Cockerham hits career high in loss at Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Graysen Cockerham connected on 10 of her 12 field-goal tries for a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers Saturday, but it wasn't enough for the Goshen College women's basketball team in a 72-59 Crossroads League loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University at Ariel Arena.

TaNiece Chapman added 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (8-14, 1-9), who shot 43 percent from the floor and 56 percent from long range.

Taylor Gregory led Mount Vernon Nazarene (15-7, 5-5) with 19 points, connecting 7 times on 15 shots and adding 13 rebounds for a double-double. Elizabeth Fee added 10 points and Dani Ellerbrock and Maggie Coblentz each chipped in 9.

The Cougars shot 41 percent from the floor and 29 percent from long range but forced 17 turnovers and outrebounded Goshen 38-35. Sage Brannon led all players with 3 steals while Ellerbrock paced the team with 4 assists.

Chapman led the Maple Leafs with 2 takeaways. Cockerham, Murff and Kyre added four rebounds apiece.

The Cougars led 20-16 at the quarter and opened the margin up to 42-29 at halftime. It was 58-39 after three quarters before Goshen outscored its host 20-14 in the final 10 minutes.

GC returns home Wednesday night to host Grace College in the opener of a Crossroads League doubleheader. The women tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8.
