Top-ranked Knights blank Maple Leafs

Goshen hangs tight early before Marian runs rule later sets

INDIANAPOLIS — Four early leads were not harbingers of things to come Friday night as the Goshen College women's volleyball team lost a three-set match at Marian University 25-15, 25-10, 25-9 at the Knights' Physical Education Center.

Goshen took the lead at 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 in the first set, starting the match with four kills in the first seven rallies and trailed 10-9 in the first set before the top-ranked team in the NAIA turned on the overdrive.

Christina Towne led the Maple Leafs (0-8, 0-8 Crossroads League) with 5 kills and 9 digs in the loss. Marian, the defending Crossroads League and NAIA champion, got 7 winners from Kalyn Schreiber and 6 apiece from Skyler Van Note and Michaela Hoffa.

The Knights (7-1, 7-1) got kills for 39 of their 75 points, adding 9 aces and 8 blocks. Gianna Feld led all players with 7 aces, the most by any player in a Crossroads League match this fall. Sydney Henke registered 4 blocks and Averi Lanman and Lark Jones had 3 each.

Marian broke open the first set with an 8-1 run on the serves of Maddie Keerns and Katie Hardegree, turning that 10-9 lead into 18-10 before Goshen got three points back on consecutive Knight errors. The hosts won 7 of the last 9 points in the first set and stretched that into a 21-4 run by the middle of the second stanza.

After a 3-2 start to the second set, which included kills by Amy Baca and Felicity Elkin on the Goshen side, Marian used six- and twelve-point runs to seize control. Goshen picked up six of the next seven points, but it would be too little, too late to save the night from the Knights.

Six of Feld's seven aces came in the third set, with four of them in succession.

Goshen's weekend of road matches continues Saturday with a visit to Huntington University to round out the first half of the conference schedule. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Platt Arena.
