Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tony Miller

Goshen threatens but doesn't score in rivalry matchup

Corona takes as many shots as Bethel's entire team but Pilots score more than Leafs

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Goshen College sophomore Litzy Corona led all players with 5 shots, but the Bethel University women's soccer team broke through when it mattered and topped the Maple Leafs 1-0 in a Crossroads League makeup game Tuesday night at Morey Field.

The Pilots (1-2, 1-2) needed an entire team to match Corona's shot total, but Reyna Cruz scored with 34:44 left in regulation on assists by Jalyn Cirino and Olivia Lambdin for the only goal of the game.

Goshen (1-4, 1-4) had all three corner kicks in the second half and a 5-2 edge in that category for the game. All three corners came in a four-minute span between the 77th and 81st minutes.

Corona hit the woodwork twice, once less than two minutes before the Pilots scored and once with 27 minutes remaining, and Kristen Terrell made four saves to keep Goshen off the scoreboard. Katie Baer matched that total for the Maple Leafs.

Neither team took a shot for the first 32 minutes of regulation before Corona tried one with 12:12 left in the first half. Goshen missed on three attempts over the last 10 minutes heading into the intermission. Terrell made two saves and one try sailed wide.

The victory gave Bethel half a point in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup rivalry trophy standings; the Pilots sport a lead of 2¼ to 1¼ in the all-sports competition so far this season.

Goshen finished with an 8-5 edge in total shots but Bethel had a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. The Maple Leafs took five of the match's seven corners.

GC is idle until Saturday when it returns to the road to visit Taylor University in Upland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
