Grace tops Goshen in makeup game

Goshen leads in corners but Lancers score five times

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Goshen College men's soccer team had more corner kicks and produced 10 shots of its own Thursday night, but its Grace College opponent was more successful at finding the back of the net in a 5-0 defeat at 1st Source Bank Field in Winona Lake.

Five Lancers scored the goals and four others received the assist, continuing a trend for the Lancers (2-2-2, 2-2-2 Crossroads League): only one Grace player had multiple goals coming into the match and none had multiple assists.

Matias da Fonseca made two stops for the Maple Leafs (0-3-1, 0-3-1). Lucas Bontreger and Stuart Aeschliman tied for the game high with 3 shots apiece and Henrique Eichenberger put both of his tries on frame.

The Maple Leafs pressed from the opening whistle, earning a corner kick 44 seconds into the match, but it was Grace that found the scoresheet first when Korry Hamlin scored in the 15th minute. Goshen put three shots on target before the Lancers doubled their lead through Felipe Gruber in the 27th minute, which marked the first time all season that Goshen or its opponent has had a multi-goal lead. Bontreger also provided the last shot of the half with about 21 seconds remaining.

Tyler Brueckman made it 3-0 Lancers less than three minutes after the intermission, and the road back only got tougher when Goshen was reduced to 10 men by a red card. Cedric Brenneman and Shemar Degannes added Grace goals in the last 10 minutes.

Goshen concludes its stretch of four games in eight days on Saturday when it returns to host Taylor University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
