Branagan hits career high in loss to Trinity Christian

Junior scores 34, but rest of team held to 30

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College junior Austin Branagan poured in 34 points Wednesday night in a 74-64 men's basketball loss to Trinity Christian College in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.

Branagan, who led all scorers with 22 points in the first half, went 10-for-16 from the floor including a 4-for-4 start from 3-point range to go with 10 free throws on 13 tries. He also finished with 5 rebounds, a block and two steals.

Michael Bowers added 12 points and Colin Flowers had 10 for the Maple Leafs (2-4). Phillip Hughes led all players with 11 assists and Bowers paced the team with 4 steals and 2 blocks.

Sterling Brown led the Trolls (1-1) with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 3 triples, and posted 5 assists and 2 steals. Ngoye Bob-Manuel led the team with 3 blocks.

The Maple Leafs won the opening tip for the first time this season, and while Trinity Christian scored the game's first bucket, Branagan personally accounted for Goshen's first 14 points as the hosts opened an 18-4 lead in the first nine minutes.

Trinity Christian had an answer, though, dropping off 12 of the next 14 points to close within 20-16. The Maple Leafs' lead ballooned back to 10 at 31-21 before TCC scored the last 11 points of the half to take a 32-31 lead.

Goshen took the lead back on a Braden Kingery triple to make it 39-37 just before the first media timeout of the second half and held on for the next six minutes as two Branagan free throws pushed the lead to 49-46 at the midpoint of the half.

Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, games are 40 minutes and not 30. Trinity Christian hit its next 6 shots and Goshen went 0-for-3 with 3 turnovers as the Trolls scored 15 straight points to seize control.

Goshen closed within 8 points at 72-64 when Robert Sanders scored his first points of the game on a 3-pointer with 25.5 seconds left.

Goshen returns to the floor Saturday for its Crossroads League opener against the University of Saint Francis. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
