IWU powers way past Maple Leafs

Nation's seventh-ranked team puts down 43 kills in match

MARION, Ind. — One of the top women's volleyball teams in the Crossroads League took out its frustrations on Goshen College Thursday night when seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University blanked the Maple Leafs 25-13, 25-11, 25-7 at Luckey Arena.

Madi Simmons led the Maple Leafs with 4 aces and 15 assists in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-7.

Ana Collar led the Wildcats (11-1) with 14 winners, beating out Martina Demarchi who had 9 and Rachel Klitzing's 8. Collar also had 3 aces and 8 digs, finishing second on the team behind Havyn Gates in both categories. Courtney Watkins led all players with 3 blocks.

Goshen (0-14) got 6 digs from Amy Baca and 5 kills from Felicity Elkin to lead the team. Christina Towne registered 4 kills and an ace.

Indiana Wesleyan hit .569 with 43 kills against 2 attack errors in the match, posting 16 kills in each of the first two sets and 11 in the third. Goshen combined for 18 kills and 14 errors.

Three Simmons aces in five rallies started the match for the Maple Leafs, who led 5-0 and 6-1 before the Wildcats went on a 16-3 run. IWU opened the second set with an 8-2 spurt, including five straight points on Gates' serve after Goshen closed within 3-2, and did not allow Goshen to win consecutive points in the set.

GC led again at 1-0 in the third set after Simmons opened with an ace, but two GC attack errors made it 3-1 Wildcats and that was all the opening that the hosts needed. Gates served out an 8-point run to go up 12-4 and Collins had a service tenure of identical length later in the set.

Goshen is slated to return to Grant County on Friday evening to close out the regular season against Taylor University, with first serve set for 7 p.m. in Odle Arena
