Box Score

MARION, Ind. — Michael Bowers scored 17 points for his best total since November and Austin Branagan was nearly perfect from the floor, shooting 6-of-7 for 15 points Saturday afternoon as the Goshen College men's basketball team lost 95-78 to NAIA Division II no. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University at Luckey Arena.

Tahj Curry added 13 points, Ben Cotton 9 and Trevor Franklin 8 for the Maple Leafs (4-22, 0-14), who shot better than 50 percent from the floor (29-for-52) and made more than half of their 3-point shots (11-for-21).

Center Evan Maxwell shot 11-for-15, leading all scorers with 26 points and all rebounders with 9 caroms for the Wildcats (22-4, 12-2). Kyle Mangas added 18 points and Canaan Coffey scored 11 while Noah Smith added 9 points and 7 rebounds out of the backcourt.

The Wildcats mirrored Goshen's shooting percentage, connecting at 54 percent (38-for-70) from the floor, but used a 37-27 advantage on the glass and 14 steals to create the extra possessions necessary for the final margin. Tanner Rubio led the team with 5 steals and Maxwell had a game-high 3 offensive rebounds.

IWU took the early lead behind a 10-0 run into the game's first media timeout, but Goshen would answer that with a 9-0 spurt that was capped with a Franklin bucket just after the midpoint of the first half. Maxwell's personal 4-0 run put the Wildcats ahead a minute later and the margin was 11 points again by halftime.

The Wildcats shot 56 percent in the second half, adding a quartet of 3-pointers to score 50 points in the final 20 minutes. After Bowers' opening bucket cut the lead to 45-36, a 9-0 run ensured that Indiana Wesleyan would lead by double figures for the rest of the half.

Goshen's Ben Cotton and IWU's Canaan Coffey each converted on a game-high three 3-pointers; Cotton was perfect from long range while Coffey led a Wildcat offense that shot 26 percent (7-for-27) from distance.

Goshen will play its second-to-last road game of the season on Tuesday before starting a two-game homestand with Senior Day festivities next Saturday, Feb. 15. The midweek contest sends the Maple Leafs to Odle Arena in Upland, Indiana, to meet Taylor University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
