GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's volleyball team kicked off its home slate Saturday afternoon, falling in three sets to seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University at Gunden Gymnasium. The Wildcats won 25-13, 25-12, 25-9.
Taylor Eash led the Maple Leafs (0-2, 0-2 Crossroads League) with 4 kills, beating out
Felicity Elkin and
Haylee Pennington by one winner apiece. Elkin paced the team with 5 digs and 2 blocks.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-0, 3-0) got 8 winners from Allison Sparrow to go along with 5 from Rachel Klitzing and 5 from Macy Puthoff. Olivia Zawadski led the Wildcats with 17 assists and 4 of the team's 13 aces.
Goshen took three of the first four points of the match, but three Maple Leaf errors factored into a 9-2 Wildcat run that had the visitors in front 10-5 later in the set. IWU later closed with five- and seven-point runs to end the set.
In the second stanza, the Wildcats never trailed, using an 8-2 run to break open a 6-4 lead as they hit .571 with 14 kills. It was 9-5 early in the third before the visitors escaped with 16 of the last 20 points.
Each team emptied its bench, with Indiana Wesleyan using 17 players and the Maple Leafs playing nine. The Wildcats racked up 38 kills and 7 errors while Goshen had 13 and 13 respectively.
The Maple Leafs hit the road and cross state lines Wednesday night when they return to action against Spring Arbor University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the McDonald Athletic Center in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
