GOSHEN, Ind. — They say good things come to those who wait.
The Goshen College men's tennis team closed its conference season by sweeping a pair of doubles matches from Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday night, winning eight of the nine games played to finish a 4-3 victory in a match that began on Saturday, Sept. 12 and was suspended due to rain.
Mount Vernon Nazarene held serve to go up 3-2 when the final women's doubles match resumed and held on for a 6-4 victory there, winning the women's match by an identical 4-3 margin.
Play resumed at 10:13 p.m. EDT following Mount Vernon Nazarene's trip over from Bethel, where they had played twice earlier in the day. By 10:32, the match was over, and with it, so was Goshen's conference regular season.
Earlier in the day, Goshen played its last full matches of the Crossroads League slate, falling 6-1 in both men's and women's action against Marian University.
The Knight men (4-2, 4-2) dropped a total of five games in doubles action, then moved on to singles, where Goshen defaulted at two spots and lost at three others.
Javier Gallego Murcia got the win at no. 1 singles, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Camilo Mesa for the only point of the day for Goshen (3-6, 3-5).
Marian's women (5-1, 5-1) swept all three doubles matches.
Meaghan Godzisz and
Victoria Oakes had the best showing for the Maple Leafs (1-8, 0-8), taking three games in their loss at no. 2.
In singles action, all six matches went in straight sets. The second spot was again the bright spot for the Maple Leafs, who got a 7-5, 6-0 win from
Sarah Hinshaw over Laura Kuebler.
Hannah McCoy also took five games off Lizzie McClure at no. 4, falling 7-5, 6-1.
With the conference regular season over, the Maple Leaf men will be the sixth seed in next week's Crossroads League tournament and will travel to either Huntington or Marian; the final standings won't be known until makeup matches finish on Saturday.
GC's women finished ninth in the conference and will return to action on Monday, Sept. 28 at Indiana Tech.
