GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's volleyball team continued its search for its first win of the season Thursday night, dropping a 25-12, 25-16, 25-7 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Gunden Gymnasium.
Madison Coles led the Maple Leafs (0-5, 0-5) with 5 kills and a block in the match while
Felicity Elkin and
Taylor Eash each finished with 3 winners and Eash also added a block.
Madi Simmons paced the team with 2 aces and
Christina Towne was credited with 1 due to a delay sanction imposed against Mount Vernon Nazarene at the beginning of the match.
The Cougars (2-3, 2-3) got a match-high 11 kills from Nicole Winkler, who also led all players with 2 blocks to tie with Mary Kate Harmody. Harmody added 7 winners, Tory Small had 6 and Erica Gasser chipped in 5. Paige Brenner assisted on 22 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double.
After delay sanctions against both teams made the score 1-1 before the first serve, the Cougars reeled off 11 of the first 12 rallies to take a 10-point first-set lead. Goshen found a bit of an answer in a 7-2 spurt that included three Coles winners, closing to 17-11, but MVNU finished things off with an 8-1 run to take the first stanza.
The second set was the most competitive, with GC opening 6-3 and 9-6 leads before the Cougars retaliated with 16 points on the next 19 rallies capped by an Ellie Ruby service ace. GC picked off four of the last seven points but fell behind 2-0 nevertheless.
MVNU left little doubt in the third set, winning the first four points and adding a 9-0 run later on before finishing things off with two four-point spurts. The visitors posted 31 kills on 61 swings in the last two stanzas and committed only two errors in the third set.
Goshen travels to the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne on Saturday for a 4 p.m. first serve.
