First-half run downs Leafs in Ohio

Curry drops 21 as team rebounds in second to close within eight

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Tahj Curry scored 21 points and Austin Branagan added 17 Saturday as a shorthanded Goshen College men's basketball team dropped a 73-65 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Crossroads League competition at Ariel Arena.

Ryan Mansbarger canned four 3-pointers on his way to 16 points for the Maple Leafs (3-14, 1-6), who used a six-player rotation until the final minutes. Kedrick Bibby added 9 rebounds and Robert Sanders had 5 assists while Curry led the team with five steals.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (3-5, 3-2) got 20 points from Clay Hilliard and 18 from Jevon Knox as each man sank four 3s on the way to a team total of 11 triples. The Cougars shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half, going 10-for-19 from distance, and finished the game at 51 percent.

Baskets by Curry and Bibby tied the score twice in the opening four minutes before Knox's 3-pointer put the Cougars up 8-5. Sanders added a steal and a fast-break layup before the next nine minutes belonged to the hosts, who led by as many as 26.

Branagan led Goshen with 11 points in the first half as MVNU led 46-24 at halftime.

The Maple Leafs cut the final margin to eight points with a 19-6 run after the Cougars led by as many as 21 with seven minutes remaining. Goshen shot 51 percent (18-for-35) after halftime, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, but finished the game at 32 percent from long range and 2-for-7 from the line.

Mount Vernon Nazarene assisted on 21 of its 28 field goals and came away with a 39-31 edge on the glass.

Goshen will seek to rebound Wednesday in a 7 p.m. matchup with Grace at Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
