Hot foul shooting not enough in loss to MVNU

Leafs, Cougars combine to go 35-for-38 at foul line

GOSHEN, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman led Goshen College with 16 points and 8 rebounds Saturday in a 73-56 women's basketball loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University inside Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.

Graysen Cockerham added 13 points and 6 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (3-11, 1-4).

The Cougars got a game-high 23 points from Rylee Pireu and a double-double from Taylor Gregory, who made hay at the foul line where she was a perfect 6-for-6 on the way to 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-7, 2-3) was nearly perfect at the foul line, going 20-for-21, and canned 7 3-pointers in the victory, also outrebounding the Maple Leafs 34-33. Goshen went 15-for-17 on free throws but did not manage a 3-pointer in the second half.

MVNU did its first-quarter scoring in runs, breaking ties with sprees of 4-0, 5-0 and 9-0 in that order. Goshen rolled in seven straight points across the quarter break and pulled within two at 23-21 when Kiarah Copeland canned a triple with 5:54 left in the second period but went without a field goal for the last 3:55 of the half and trailed 33-26 at halftime.

A 9-2 run stretched the Cougars' margin back to double figures before the midpoint of the third quarter, though Cockerham personally scored all the Maple Leaf points in a 6-2 run immediately thereafter. A Maria Dobson 3-pointer put MVNU up 14 by quarter's end and started an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Sophia Eli led Goshen with 3 assists to go with 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. The Maple Leafs finished their scoring with a pair of Jazmin Vargas free throws, marking the first points of the freshman's career.

GC continues its stretch of four games in eight days on Monday when it hosts Marian University. In a concession to Monday night classes, the tip-off is set for 4 p.m. on GoLeafs Live.
