At Goshen College, we strive to create champions in competition, in the classroom and in the community. While many of the stories we tell on this website have to do with contests, we also know that our student-athletes will be members of society long after they hang up their uniform for the last time. Alumni Friday is a weekly series that will catch up with some Goshen College alumni to reflect on where their experience in the Maple City has taken them.
Tony Janzen '08 was a physical education major and men's soccer player from Elkhart, Indiana.
What have you been up to since graduating?
I am currently teaching at an alternative high school in Goshen and coaching boys soccer at Bethany Christian High School. My wife and I spent 3 years from 2013 to 2016 working with Mennonite Central Committee in Cambodia. Since graduating, I have kept a close eye on the GC soccer team and try to catch a game in person or via the livestream when I can. I have also helped in organizing alumni games against the GC reserve team over the past few years. That has been a great way to stay connected to the program and get to know a lot of the players.
What do you miss the most about Goshen?
I miss being in the same place as my closest friends and I miss competing in soccer at that level. The overall social, academic, and athletic experience was one that challenged me and helped me grow into the person I am today.
What advice do you have for current student-athletes?
Enjoy this period of time in your lives. A very small percentage of high school athletes go on to complete at any level of college athletics. You will have unique and memorable experiences. GC is a special place.
