Leafs outlast Cougars in double overtime

Smucker and Macias get their first goals of the season

GOSHEN, Ind. – It was expected to be a close match between the Spring Arbor and Goshen men's soccer teams at the Ingold Complex on Wednesday night. With nearly identical records, the two clubs fought it out on the field, and it would take not one but two overtimes for a winner to be declared. Uriel Macias swung his jersey in celebration after scoring the winning goal – his first of the season.

Neither team got on the board in the first half. Goshen had nine shots whereas Spring Arbor had four. On the other hand, the Cougars had five corner kicks and the Leafs had just one. In the 70th minute, Tristan Smucker got the scoring underway from a pass by Lucas Vilela. A senior, this is the first goal in Smucker's Goshen career. Vilela had his third assist this season.

It wasn't long before Spring Arbor answered. Jack Voight caught the keeper too far out of the box, and he was able to tap one in. The teams combined for 17 fouls in the second half and 15 shots. Tied at one after regulation, the two went into overtime. The Cougars (6-8-2, 3-4-1 CL) had four shots and two corner kicks in the first overtime period but couldn't get one in. Goshen had a couple of shots as well. Still tied, it took a second overtime. But it would only take a few more minutes before the fans could go back to their cozy homes and enjoy a hot drink.

On a beautiful cross, Uriel Macias waited patiently as the defender missed his chance at the ball. As it bounced right in front of him, he kicked it to the top left corner of the net and scored the game-winning goal. It was the first goal of the season for Macias, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

Goshen (6-8-3, 2-6-0 CL) finished the evening with 19 shots and six on goal. Matias da Fonseca had two saves. Lucas Bontrager and Lucas Vilela had four shots apiece.

The Maple Leafs wrap up the season on Saturday at 7:00 pm against Huntington. It will be Senior Night at the Ingold Complex, so be sure to show up and support all our seniors have accomplished.
