Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Justin DeWeese

Three reach double figures in defeat at Concordia

Michael Johnson and Elias Ramirez with 14 points and five rebounds each

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Goshen and Concordia (Mich.) men's basketball teams both had a 2-2 record entering their matchup on Saturday afternoon. Concordia would be the one that was able to jump to above .500, outlasting the Maple Leafs 70-57.

"We battled through some adversity and bumps and bruises," said head coach Jon Tropf. "Our guys showed some fight today."

Goshen was first on the board, scoring the first four points. The Cardinals then had a 22-6 run to take a 12-point lead. As the teams went into the locker rooms for the half, Goshen had cut the lead to eight and trailed 37-29.

The Maple Leafs were aggressive to start the second half. A 14-6 run by the Maple Leafs tied the game at 43. Goshen was never able to take the lead after that, however, and Concordia powered through for a 70-57 victory.

"I thought our defensive effort in the second half was tremendous," Tropf pointed out. "But our inability to make shots cost us."

Michael Johnson and Ryan Mansbarger each scored 14 points and brought down five rebounds. Elias Ramirez had 13 points of his own. Robert Sanders scored eight with five rebounds and two steals. Greg Johnson came off the bench to hit a couple of threes and get a few rebounds and two steals.

Concordia has now won two straight after beating Adrian at home on Tuesday, 88-74. Three of the Cardinals' next four games are also at home. Goshen gets a rest until next Saturday. On November 13th, they will face Madonna (Mich.) at home at 3:00 pm in the team's Movember Game.
