Women’s soccer season comes to a close in Spring Arbor

The team made great progress from a season ago

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Goshen women's soccer team wrapped up their season with a loss to the top seed in the Crossroads League Quarterfinals. Spring Arbor, the #3 team in the country, continued their winning way with a 7-0 victory.

The Cougars scored four goals on 12 shots in the first half. Goshen goalkeeper Makiah McCain had three saves in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Goshen cut Spring Arbor's shots in half. Yet the Cougars still pushed three more goals in the back of the net. The Maple Leafs took three shots in the second half compared to taking one in the first.

Beatriz Meneghin had two shots on goal for Goshen. Madalyne Swallow had the team's third shot on goal. Seja Lang also took a shot for Goshen.

This concludes the season for the Maple Leafs, but it was a season that was much improved compared to the shortened schedule from 2020. Goshen finished 6-11 this year and saw their goals per game increase from 0.20 to 1.24. The Leafs more than doubled their shots, advancing from 5.0 last year to 11.6 in 2021. They also improved defensively – allowing 3.20 goals per game last season but just 2.06 this year. They cut their opponents' shots per game by half – from 25.6 to 12.9 per contest.

Spring Arbor (15-0-1) has dominated this season. Winning the league tournament this season would start a new streak for the Cougars. They won the league tournament each year from 2011-18. They have not allowed their opponents to score since the first game of the season on August 16th (Embry-Riddle).

Spring Arbor will face Mount Vernon Nazarene in the semifinals on Wednesday, November 10th. The championship will take place next Saturday, November 13th.
