Janara Flowers scored a season-high 13 points in Goshen's matchup at #4 Southeastern, but the Fire prevailed 94-63. The Goshen women's basketball team is now 6-8 this season.
The Maple Leafs played well in the first quarter, building a 13-9 start until Southeastern took a two-point lead at the end of the quarter. Goshen held them to shooting 33% in the first, but the Fire eventually piled up some points.
SEU created a stretch in the second quarter where they scored 21 points while Goshen had two. Their field goal percentage drastically improved – shooting 72% in that quarter alone. They outscored the Leafs in the second 34-12 and led at the half 52-28. The Leafs recovered after halftime, however.
Goshen chipped away at the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Southeastern by eight. They continued their comeback into the fourth quarter, creating a 14-point swing in the game. They were down by 26 at one point, but with 8:10 to go, they trailed by just 12. Yet Southeastern answered again, racked up some more baskets late, and won 94-63.
Southeastern is now 14-1 this season. They had won each of their past three games by 40+ points, but Goshen put that streak to an end. SEU has won their last ten and hasn't allowed their opponent to score 65 points or more in any of those games.
Taniece Chapman had 16 points and eight boards for Goshen and shot 8-10 from the free-throw line.
Janara Flowers had season-highs with 13 points and four three-pointers made.
Kiarah Copeland built off her double-digit performance against Bryan with another one tonight – scoring 11.
The Fire came into the game leading the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 40.8%. They made an astonishing ten of their 16 attempts for 62.5% tonight. They were ranked third in field goal percentage with a 48.8% clip, and tonight shot 58.9%. They were also 18-20 at the line. Angela Perry scored 21, and Gabby Suarez had 20 for SEU. Three other players scored in double digits. They improve to 5-0 at home.
Goshen now concludes their games in the Southeastern University Christmas Invitational, but they still have one more game on their Florida trip. On Sunday, December 19, they will face Warner University at 1:00 pm in Lake Wales, Florida.
