GOSHEN, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman became the 18th Goshen College women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points on Wednesday evening in a home game against Huntington University in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
The 5-10 forward from Fort Wayne, Indiana, connected on a low-post shot with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter for her 1,000th and 1,001st career points. She was fouled on the play and added a free throw for her 1,002nd. She finished the evening with 1,006 career points and 20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and an assist in the game.
For her career, Chapman has recorded 421 field goals on 768 attempts for a 54.8 percent clip. She has five career 3-pointers and is 159-for-289 (55.0 percent) at the free-throw line with 105 assists, 101 steals and 29 blocks. In addition to her scoring milestones, she is fifth in school history with 663 rebounds and she has posted 19 career double-doubles. Her 1,006 points have come in 86 games for an average of 11.7 points per game.
This season, Chapman leads the Maple Leafs with 13.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game despite not leading the team in minutes played. She is shooting a team-high 52 percent from the floor and leads the team with 141 field goals and 60 free throws. Her 34 steals and 7 blocks are each second on the team behind Graysen Cockerham and Keyaira Murff, respectively.
On the NAIA leaderboard, her 226 rebounds entering Wednesday were eighth in the nation; she was also 40th in total scoring, 45th in field goal percentage, 46th in rebounds per game and 47th in defensive rebounds per game.
"I was really proud of TaNiece and happy to see her cross the 1,000-point plateau at an important time in the game with a big shot," said Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller. "She has worked hard for this honor and truly deserves it. It is amazing to see her and Graysen both join the 1,000-point club in their junior season. Crossroads League teams have been throwing double-teams at her left and right, and she still finds ways to power through and finish at the rim. She is a tough kid and watching her play ball just makes people excited."
Chapman is the daughter of Roniece Woodson. She is a graduate of South Side High School and a nursing major.
The class of 2022, which includes both Chapman and Graysen Cockerham, is the fourth class in GC history to include multiple 1,000-point scorers. Three of those classes have come in a seven-year span beginning with the class of 2016, which was the only class with three 1,000-point scorers.
Chapman is also the seventh GC player to score 1,000 points by the end of her junior season. On that list, she joins Cockerham and the program's top five scorers — Erin McDugle '05, Cassie Greives '11, Kathy Mast '91, Lindsay Fisher '04 and Jo'Mani Thomas '16. The class of 2022 is thus the first class with two players who each scored 1,000 points in less than three seasons.
Goshen is 7-19 overall and 3-12 in the Crossroads League with one game remaining in the regular season. The Maple Leafs sit seventh in the conference standings and have clinched their first postseason berth since 2017.
GC visits Bethel at 1 p.m. Saturday to round out the regular season. The team will then travel to second-seeded Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday in the first round of the Crossroads League tournament.
