Holy Cross tops Maple Leafs in program's first February match

Two Indiana teams traveled to Ohio to play at indoor facility

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Goshen College men's soccer team began the spring portion of its schedule on Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to Holy Cross College at Total Sports Complex in Toledo, Ohio.

Six Maple Leafs made their career debuts in the match, which was 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 into the 74th minute before the Saints added a pair of late goals to double their lead.

Six of Holy Cross's 16 field players found the scoresheet and the goals came from four different players. Victor Villareal made one save in 90 minutes in goal as the Saints moved to 2-0 in this unusual COVID-19-altered season.

Goshen (0-5-3, 0-4-3 Crossroads League) played its primary season in the fall, playing 7 of its 9 scheduled Crossroads League matches before the conference tournament in November. However, since the 2020-21 NAIA tournament has not been played, the team can continue scheduling regular-season matches and counting them on its record.

Henrique Eichenberger, Adhika Ezra and Tristan Smucker all took shots for the Maple Leafs while Gabe Beck went the distance in goal and made 4 saves. Smucker and Chino Roque each received yellow cards.

The Saints took 18 of the game's 21 shots and each team put one-third of its attempts on target. Holy Cross's Gabe Nyenka was the only player with multiple shots on goal. HCC also had 7 corner kicks.

The Maple Leafs' next scheduled game is next Tuesday, Feb. 23, when they travel to Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Michigan, to play Lawrence Technological University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EST at the indoor facility.
