Goshen uses pitching depth in loss to Indiana Tech

Maple Leafs save arms for conference by limiting each hurler to 30 pitches in loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Goshen College baseball team returned to the playing field Tuesday when it played a non-conference game against Indiana Tech at the ASH Centre in Fort Wayne. With the team playing a countable game for the first time in 23 days and slated to begin its conference slate on Thursday, the Maple Leafs split the playing time among nine pitchers.

Indiana Tech prevailed at the plate, scoring in four of seven innings in the run-rule-shortened game. The Warriors won 24-0.

Bobby Garcia and Noah Harris each had doubles for the Maple Leafs (0-3). Jaylen Dickey and Reese Whelen had hits and Nate Lange and Peyton Smith worked walks.

Kyle Staelgrave and Keegan Kwong threw scoreless innings while Camm Nickell and Toby Fox each had partial innings without allowing a run.

The Warriors (1-7) had 13 players record hits and 14 score runs. Christian de Los Santos finished with three doubles while Spenser McGhee had a single and a double and Jacob Alvidrez added two singles. De Los Santos and Jacob Daftari scored three times each and Mike Snyder drove in four.

The Warriors staked Yeshua Saint to a 7-0 lead after an inning and it was 9-0 when Kris Massey took the mound for the top of the third. Jared Maxfield had the benefit of a 20-0 margin to start the fifth and Phillip Hobbs worked the sixth. Each pitcher struck out exactly two men; Saint allowed no hits and Maxfield two, with the others giving up one apiece.

Goshen will hope for better luck on Thursday as it opens its Crossroads League slate with a Taylor University team that swept Indiana Tech by a 27-6 margin in a four-game series last weekend. The entire four-game conference set will be played at TU's Winterholter Field in Upland, with TU batting last as the home team on Thursday and Goshen taking that role on Saturday. First pitch both days is set for 1 p.m.
