Maple Leafs draw IU East in program's 1,000th match

Fakoyede levels with 24:15 remaining to get second straight road result

CENTERVILLE, Ind. The Goshen College men's soccer team fell behind early and played down a man for more than half an hour, but the Maple Leafs continued an unbeaten start to the 2021 NAIA men's soccer season with a 1-1 draw against Indiana University East on Saturday at Centerville High School.

Emmanuel Fakoyede opened his GC account by scoring the Maple Leaf goal unassisted in the 65th minute.

The Red Wolves (0-0-1) needed less than 11 minutes to get on the board in their season opener, with freshman Tristan Thomas sneaking a shot past the Maple Leaf defense in his first career game to take a 1-0 lead.

The match marked the 1,000th contest in Maple Leaf program history dating back to 1958. Goshen is 546-387-67 and ranks fifth in NAIA history in program wins.

GC is 1-0-1 on the young season and travels to the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, Illinois, next Saturday to take on the Fighting Saints. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. local time) at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
