Eight players find scoresheet in 5-1 rout of Saint Francis (Ill.)

Bontreger registers goal and assist, Vilela tabs two assists as team starts 2-0-1

JOLIET, Ill. — The Goshen College men's soccer team continued an undefeated start to the 2021 season on Saturday as it rolled to a 5-1 win over the University of Saint Francis of Illinois at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Five players scored goals, four players recorded assists and 21 saw action in some capacity as the Maple Leafs (2-0-1) led for nearly 80 percent of the 90-minute game. Goshen never trailed and got 5 saves from the tandem of Matias da Fonseca and Ruam Barbosa in goal.

Jorge Keller Martins opened the scoring on an assist from Tristan Smucker in the 18th minute. That lead lasted until the 29th minute when Sergio Fernandez-Arango got an equalizer for the Fighting Saints (0-3) with 16:20 remaining in the half.

Fifty-eight seconds later, Lars Razor added his first collegiate goal to put Goshen back in front before Lucas Bontreger's team-high third goal of the year doubled the lead with 11:32 left in the half. Henrique Eichenberger was credited with an assist on Razor's goal.

USF shut off the scoring faucet for almost 41 minutes before Goshen's leading scorer and shot-taker, Bontreger and Lucas Vilela respectively, hooked up Emmanuel Fakoyede for a 4-1 lead with 15:33 remaining. Vilela picked up his second assist on Wendo Kisila's first college goal with 34 seconds left.

While the Maple Leafs outshot USF 13-6 in the first half, the attempt tally was a more reserved 8-7 in GC's favor in the last 45 minutes. Each team took 5 corner kicks and the Saints had a 17-10 edge in free kicks.

Vilela took five shots and put four of them on target to lead all players. Kisila took three shots and Bontreger added a pair. The USF scorer, Fernandez-Arango, was the only Saint with more than one shot on goal. He had two.

Sebastian Mireles recorded six saves between the sticks for the Saints.

Goshen continues its season-opening five-match road trip on Wednesday when it visits the University of Michigan at Dearborn for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Please note that while UMD's main campus is in Dearborn, the Wolverines play their home matches at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview.
