MARION, Ind. — The Goshen College women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday night, losing 25-7, 25-6, 25-18 to the NAIA's 16th-ranked team at Luckey Arena in a Crossroads League match.
Sadie Brenneman led the Maple Leafs (3-9, 0-3) with 10 digs and 4 kills in the performance. Naomi Willis added 7 assists and Emma Dippon had a pair of blocks.
Indiana Wesleyan (5-1, 3-1) got a pair of double-digit kill performances from Ana Collar and Courtney Watkins on the back of 22 assists from Olivia Zawadzki and another nine from Seabring Mak. IWU finished with 41 kills to Goshen's 14.
IWU went on a pair of 7-point runs in the first set, taking the score to 9-2 and 17-4. They opened a 9-2 lead in the second set as well. The third set was the tightest as the Maple Leafs went up 2-0 before giving up an 11-3 run. GC answered with a pair of four-point spurts, though, including aces from Gwyn Bellamy and Riley Ratliff, and got back within 19-15 late in the match.
The Wildcats hit .398 for the match, posting at least 12 kills in all three sets and 17 winners against a single error in the opening stanza. Rebekah Sergent and Zawadzki also had multiple aces.
GC will seek to put that match in the rear-view mirror on Saturday afternoon when it returns home to face Spring Arbor University, its first conference opponent of the 2021 season that is not also in the national rankings. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
