SYLVANIA, Ohio — Lucas Bontreger scored his fourth goal of the season late in the first half to tie the score, but a 68th-minute cross gave Lourdes University the winner as the Goshen College men's soccer team dropped its second straight game Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Farouk Amoo scored both goals for the Gray Wolves (5-2), knocking in the icebreaker from 12 yards out in the 16th minute and taking an assist from Hussein Sbeiti with 22:06 remaining in the second half.
Lourdes got two saves from Jorge Mendoza in the first half before Garrett Baxley backstopped the team and made one save in the final 45 minutes. Matias da Fonseca made three saves for GC (3-2-3).
The teams combined for nine shots on target, with Lourdes holding an 11-6 lead in total shots and a 5-4 margin in shots on goal; the hosts also took four of the five corner kicks and had a 12-10 edge in direct free kicks.
Bontreger and Amoo each led their teams as the only players to take multiple shots on goal; Amoo led all players with 5 attempts.
The teams combined for 6 fouls in the first 15 minutes, so perhaps it was fitting that Amoo opened the scoring from the spot of jurisprudence with the game clock showing 29:32. The Maple Leafs immediately followed the goal with a substitution but were held off the scoreboard until a Joao Rufino shot in the 39th minute.
Emmanuel Fakoyede sent the pass into the box for Bontreger, who leveled the score with 3:45 left before the half, but the teams only made it to the intermission after three more fouls.
The Maple Leafs opened the second half with two shots, both high, and added a corner kick before Amoo re-broke the tie. Lourdes took all five shots over the last 20 minutes.
Goshen will close out its non-conference schedule on Saturday with a visit to Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Blue Devils Stadium.
