Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tony Miller

Leafs retreat to .500 after second straight one-goal loss

Indiana Tech scores golden goal on throw-in, dribble and lob over defense

GOSHEN, Ind. — Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes the ball sails over your defense and short-hops into the far side netting of the goal 84 seconds into sudden-death overtime for the only score of the game.

The latter outcome befell the Goshen College women's soccer team Wednesday night when Indiana Tech's service into the penalty area found the nylon of the goal net in the 92nd minute of a 1-0 Maple Leaf loss at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Alina Garcia scored the game-winning goal on a ball that looked like an assist and Alyssa Williams picked up the assist on a throw-in from in front of the Indiana Tech bench. The shot was Garcia's only shot on goal of the game and the first of her career; Garcia had not appeared on a scoresheet yet in her freshman season and Williams' assist was her second.

The teams finished regulation level on both goals (there were none) and shots (each team had 17) with Goshen holding a 9-5 edge in shots on target. Seja Lang led all players with 6 total shots and 3 shots on goal, followed by Beatriz Meneghin with 3 and 2 respectively.

Indiana Tech (4-2) outshot Goshen 4-1 in the opening 10 minutes and held that three-shot margin all the way to halftime when it was 10-7. The Maple Leafs (3-3) matched that figure in the second half, including five shots and four shots on goal over the last 15 minutes, but of course the goal count is the important statistic and the teams remained level there.

Each team took 5 corner kicks and 11 free kicks in the match; Michaela Bitle made 9 saves for Indiana Tech and MaKiah McCain added 5 for Goshen.

Goshen is idle at the weekend and returns to action next Tuesday when it plays at Lourdes University in Ohio in its final non-conference tuneup. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium, with the afternoon match necessitated by other games at the facility later that evening.
