Marian blanks Leafs in Crossroads League lidlifter

Willis' 16 digs, Lynch's 10 kills pace Maple Leafs in defeat

GOSHEN, Ind. — The NAIA's 13th-ranked women's volleyball team swept its conference opener and continued a nine-match winning streak Wednesday night and the Goshen College Maple Leafs had the luck of being on the other side of the net in a three-set loss (25-14, 25-13, 25-11) to Marian University at Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.

The Knights (9-0, 1-0) finished 58 of the match's 113 rallies with a kill or an ace, racking up 47 spike winners and a .541 hitting percentage in the process. Goshen hit better than .200 in each of the first two sets and finished with 25 kills, led by Emily Lynch with 10.

Naomi Willis added 16 assists while Brielle Agnew and Jaelyn Amhdar each contributed aces for the Maple Leafs (1-9, 0-1). Sadie Brenneman and Haylee Pennington finished off 4 kills apiece.

Skyler Van Note led Marian with 8 kills, followed by 7 each from Emma Hirchak and Jaymison Summers. Lexi Spence contributed 24 assists and Maggie Meyer had 14 digs.

Marian won the first point of all three sets, going up 5-0, 7-1 and 7-0 respectively. While Goshen followed that with a 4-1 run in the third set, the damage had largely been done and the Knights added 5- and 6-point runs later in the set to compensate.

GC travels to the Rittenmeyer Center at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana, on Saturday for a tri-match with the host Crimson Wave and Bluefield State College of West Virginia. First serve is set for 2 p.m. EDT when the Maple Leafs play Bluefield State and 4 p.m. against Calumet; please note that these times are a change from the original schedule.
